This Music Monday’s main feature is The Peridot reviews…Dur& an album by the talented Durand Bernarr. Bernarr released his R&B/Soul project on August 28, 2020 under DSING Records.
Here at The Peridot, we believe that you have to live with a record before you can give a proper review. You need to run them songs back three, four, five times, to pick up on the subtle details, to really appreciate the vocal layering, to hear the harmonies, and the ad libs.
I have listened to Dur& in the car on my commute to work, at work, while ignoring my co-workers, in the shower, while vacuuming the carpet, while frying chicken. I have digested this music in many a scenario, and it is indeed a certified groove.
Durand is a groove and a moodt. Mood with a “t.” I was first introduced to him via a Soundcloud link to his positive affirming anthem “Fuck Nigga Free.” A favorite of mine, especially. I had the pleasure of seeing him live at ONEMusic Fest in Atlanta, Ga, when he backed up the very banging and the very sanging, Teedra Moses. She highlighted him, and he belted his riffs and runs of “FNF”, effortlessly. Durand’s voice tickles notes. He plays with them. He is having so much fun. You can tell that he truly enjoys what he does, and appreciates his gifts enough to share them with us.
Dur&, the self titled album, is a genuine and captivating display of Durand Bernarr’s personality. The lyrics are clever and witty and sung as though the notes float from out of Durand’s throat and delicately pour across his bluesy beats. Durand Bernarr is a R&B singer. I value and appreciate authentic Sangers (with an ‘a’) of the rhythm and blues genre.
